Re: 17' 0" Freedom
My math says it will be just on the border of needing flotation so I will probably add a couple small ones (foam covered with kevlar).
Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Yes ! I agree !
A Flotation chamber will also add structural stability to your stems, not that you need any.

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Well I've made some more progress on this build. I added flotation chambers, built some seats, skid plates and a yoke. All are installed and it's now ready for finish (inside still needs a good sanding. Current weight is 45.1 pounds. Sanding and finish might add a pound or two. A few pics:

In a word... awesome work Randy.
Curious if you have figured out the cost differences in the wood versus composite builds?
Watching this build ... have it in my mind to give it a go at some point.

The Yoke looks cool, as well as the canoe !
I tried something different, on my composite ! I put my Skid plate on the inside. Hides it from view, and still effective

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Put my 2nd carbon/kevlar Freedom17 together this evening. Final weight 46.1 pounds. Now I need some open water...
This is 12 pounds lighter than the first version (starting with the exact same first 3 layers). I scrimped weight wherever I could. But I think I could take another 3 or maybe 4 off the whole weight if I redid the first 3 layers.... Not sure I'll do it though, this weight might be low enough for my tripping needs...

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Started a 3rd Carbon / Kevlar Freedom 17 yesterday. Changed the lay-up this time. I started with a layer of Carbon Fiber and then added a layer of Kevlar. It was a long day... I'm experimenting with a new core that might help save some weight. Also, will use Innegra on the inside... I put the final coat of epoxy on early this morning. Here's a few pics....

Very nice work Randy ...following
Re: 17' 0" Freedom
Those Composites are addicting !
I just finished a White water hull, for a friend, Used a Royalex hull, as the male mold.
How are you going to open the stems to lift the hull off the mold ?
And what did you use for a release ?
Looks great !

Re: 17' 0" Freedom
No need to open the stems on this hull. It will slide off the mold (no tumblehome or recurve on the stems on the Freedom 17). Release "agent" is Duck brand heat shrink plastic...
Re: 17' 0" Freedom
That is the shrink plastic I use.
My last build had a lot of wrinkles, which meant a lot of scraping and sanding on the inside. I'm thinking going with 100% Partal (PVA) this next time.
I'm always worried about staining my molds ( Strippers) I do like how smooth the interiors of the hulls turn out.
Guess I should build a Freedom 17 and try it !
Nice thread Randy ! Great pics !
