Just curious... Are you building without outer stems?
Re: 19' 9" Chaa Creek Expedition
Just curious if you planed your planks to a uniform thickness, before you cut your strips ? If not you will likely see discrepancies in you strip widths.jimlgordon wrote:setting up mill the cove and bead on the mountain of strips
I solve this problem, by running my strips Between the bit, and the fence.
A pic.
This effectively Kills Two Birds with One stone @ Uniforms the strip width in the first pass, and cuts the bead.
This is totally safe with thin strips of Cedar. I wouldn't do this with Hard wood.

great idea about the router... I saw that pic before but did not understand it then... now it makes more sense to me after a trial run of the setup

As some can probably observe, I forgot to steam and bend the outer stems so I will have to do that next over the inner stems.

Oh OK. I was actually thinking you might be going with only inner stems. That could work nicely too...

Steamed the bow and stern outer stems… this time the wood was so hot and wet, even the maple and walnut strips bent very easily with very little pressure.
Re: 19' 9" Chaa Creek Expedition
I find that the hardwoods actually seem to bend easier than the softwood:.

Added a walnut strip to the bow and glued it up (like I did on the stern earlier) and replaced the middle support with a wider stance so it can be rolled easier without distorting the strongback and molds.

Exciting part, as you strip the boat ... you can start to imagine that it is really a canoe .... enjoy

Excellent start !
Staples aren't too deep ! Duct tape works great on the forms ! And you have simple miter for the strips !
