Notches in all the station molds at the baseline?
Hi Folks,
i have a Redbird plan and I am working on the station molds; I notice that there are two notches in all the molds at the baseline. Do these have a reason to be t hat I just cannot find in the text of the book?

I don't have the plans, but I'm wondering if this is the shearline markings ? ?

Re: Notches in all the station molds at the baseline?
Hi Jim,
I think there is also a notch at the sheer line of the boat, on several stations. But in the case of the plans it shows a notch at the baseline, which is at the bottom of the station mold, where it attaches to the strongback.
I admit -- I am lazy, and I don't want to cut the notches if I don't have to.

It may be an alignment cut out, so that if there is a corresponding block on the the strong back, you can use that to center the form...just guessing
Pictures would make this sort of thing a lot easier.

I've built the Redbird but I don't remember the notches you are referring to. A picture would help.
I would advise that you extend your forms an inch below the sheerline on a fair curve to give yourself some additional material to use for clamping (and I always put a notch at the sheerline to make sure it is well known).
Thanks

I believe Cruiser hit the nail on the head.
Making a saw cut at the base of center line, makes it easy to see from either side of the form, where the base line is in relationship to the center line of the strongback.
A good idea !
I've always just transferred the center line of the form to both sides, with a pencil. That way it's always visible, when attached to the cleat .

Jim, I'm not so sure you / we are interpreting the question.... the question references 2 notches in each form (not one in the middle)...
"I notice that there are two notches in all the molds at the baseline."

Re: Notches in all the station molds at the baseline?
I've mulled this a bit more and I'm guessing that those baseline notches are to mark the actual baseline. If you build your forms taller (some people want their build to be a bit higher for convenience - I always add a couple inches to my molds if my plywood allows the molds to still fit on 2 sheets), you still want to know where the baseline is (in case you need to make any measurements from the baseline to other part of the craft). If you are building your forms to end exactly at the baseline, there are of course no notches to deal with.
Make sense?

Yeah Randy !
I don't have the plans, so I maybe off on this one.
But a notch cut ( saw kerf) at the center of the form base line, would make it easy to align, regardless of what side of the form faces the cleat !

Re: Notches in all the station molds at the baseline?
I see the notch you mean on the baseline near the centerline on the half plan. When you flop the plan over you end up with two notches. They're not labelled, and I can't think of a reason for them offhand, unless they're finger holes to help adjust the mold.
I watched Nick Offerman's video on making the mold stations for a Nomad canoe. The plans are a bit hard to see, but the molds themselves are quite visible. They don't have notches there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8cEZmO ... Bb&index=3

I might be wrong, but my gut feeling is you can leave them out.I admit -- I am lazy, and I don't want to cut the notches if I don't have to.
