I will be replacing the outwales on my SOF Prospector Ranger and have found what I believe to be conflicting information on the the placement of the scarf joint. Should the joint be cut vertically or horizontally, i.e; viewable from the seat or from the edge of the boat?

GP, I don't think it honestly matters more than the grain orientation .... on the gunnels it is a strength joint so ratio should be 9:1 or better, so it really is a non issue which way you cut it.
