Shaping the Stems

Post by EvanstonBay »

Hi all, I'm shaping my stems to accept the planks, first time doing this. I'm using a Veritas Spokeshave (first time using one of these too) to accomplish the task at hand. My understanding is that I'd want my plank to lie flatly against the stem. My difficulty is when shaping, I'll almost be there, take off what I think I need to take off, and then, I need to take off somewhere else so my question goes to what becomes acceptable and what does not. Below is an example of what I think could work but if it must be perfectly flat, it wouldn't work and I need to get at it again. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

I find it is too easy to over do the shaping with a plane or spoke shave ... so I just use a sanding stick.

The stem shaping is covered here on my last build thread https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/l ... ost-105619

I find this is the easiest way to get those surfaces so the strips lay snug.

Thanks again Brian. I'll break out the standing sticks and give it a go.

Also, is there a thread where you talk about how you did your Jimmy Clamps?

Very simple, but also very effective

Thank you. I'm not able to mill the planks in my area (no good or not good enough cedar wood in the Chicago-land area) so I'm working on doing what I can before they arrive from Bear Mountain/Noah's Mill. Working on the oars now and then will get these jimmy clamps ready to roll

You will like the Jimmy clamps ! Adding the zip tied 1/4' plastic tubing, saves a lot of fiddling. With one hand, and one motion, you can have the strip securely, clamped in place.
I'm glad to have shared this simple clamp modification!
You can zip tie to the blocks that you use at the forms too.
