cheat motise

If your table saw is your most accurate tool my advice is to cheat on the mortise and create a grove the length of the seat and the fill the gaps not occupied with the tenons with a narrow piece of wood taken from the same stock. if you are accurate in your cut the filler should fit snug and once sa...

good info

I saw the episode a few months back. If you liked this one, Ray Mears also has a good one where he canoes though Algonquin Park. For those in North America they can be found on the Outdoor Life Network (OLN). The info on the Birchbark canoe episode actually saved a buddy and I a long walk out of Alg...

Thanks

Thanks for all your responses,

Glen, You're right I should have worn a PFD.

As for the next project, I'll stick to making furniture for a while and maybe look at a kayak next year.

finished - 15' Ranger

I competed my 15' Ranger last week and following a trip to Algonquin Park (in a rented Kevlar) launched it this weekend. I was thoroughly impressed with the handling and stability. Thanks to everyone who responded to my earlier questions. The assistance of this forum was invaluable. Launching pacs a...

That might help you out. But my question is what is marine resin glue? Can the epoxy glue that is being used everyw...

Alternate joint for splicing gunnels?

I'm at the point where I am splicing 8' lengths for the gunnels of my Ranger. I made a few test scarf joints that turned out well. But I'm not a fan of the look. Has anyone tried a differnt joint? Being an amateur carpenter, I was thinking of using a rail and stile set, normally used in creating rai...

Building a 15' Prospector Ranger

I'm in the process of building a Ranger and I'm trying to record my progress and mistakes. I'd welcome any comments: www.rogerscanoe.blogspot.com I have some time to wait until I can fiberglass the hull since it's still not warm enough in my garage. I thought I would use the time to build the seats....
