Matt, Try an angle grinder with a sanding "flap-disc" on it. I use one quite extensively. You can eat away the outer gunnel in no time with a high speed angle grinder. Don't even worry about the screws, the angle grinder with the sanding flap-disc will eat them away also... Be careful, the...

Thanks Guys. Nice work. Very fancy! I think that I like eagler's approach with the light strip down the centre. That would suit the overall look of mine I think. The rest of my canoe is rather "plain" - nothing too fancy - just the natural wood... I like to keep it simple, but the strip in...

Deck Selection and Finishing Gunnels at Stems

Hello All, Looking for some ideas as to how to best finish the outer gunnels at the stem. I have updated my pics on my webpage. The gunnels are just shy of the end of the outer stem. I had two possible thought as to how to finish. 1. Cut the outer gunnels square on both sides and fabricate a one-pie...

Cam, I know what you mean about borrowing your wife's "tools". I destroyed a pair of kitchen scissors while glassing the inside of the hull on the weekend - I had to replace them with a new pair...she hasn't noticed the knife missing yet :rolling eyes The light (ash) piece on the outer par...

sorry Glen... you are definitely a "seasoned builder", however when I wrote my reply, there were no responses up yet to Cam's question..

Cam, Sorry to hear of your "woes" :sad I am new to this as well... just about finished my first canoe, but I'll give you my two cents and hopefully some of the "more seasoned" builders can pipe in.... I would suggest that you may be able to epoxy the outer walnut piece and clamp ...

I agree with Rick - do a test. I didn't have any problems with blush or milkiness with the EAST system. Very high humidity and moderate temps. I had a small fan going in my garage and the garage door wide open. Good-bad or indifferent?? I don't know, but it seemed to go OK. Best of luck with yours -...

Understood about the health issues related to green epoxy... no question... I am leaving the hull on the molds till Saturday for the epoxy to cure and not lose any of the shape of hull...particularly the tumblehome. I will also sand while on the strongback and held in-place by the molds. I will stil...

Thanks Willo... The EAST system specs say that it can be sanded (sandable) in 12 hours, but it doesn't cure for 7 days, so I'm a little confused?? I was going to leave it for a week before sanding and taking it off the mold, just because I'm not sure. There is no reason that I have to take it off ot...
