Absolutely beautifull, I guess that some of the people that have seen it suggested that it should have a place in a museum.

Jim, Thanks again for offering a carbon fiber seat, it is very appreciated. Greg, The yoke was easier than I thought to build. I first made a test on a piece of white pine in order to be sure of the shape. For the real one, I used a band saw to cut the contour then a very sharp gouge for sculpting t...

The first cedar strip canoe I made was a Prospector. Like you I did not know if I should put a keel or not. Finally I decided to go half way and did put on a flat keel. My brother now has the canoe, therefore I will give the dimentions from memory. I believe I made it about 1/2 inch in thickness and...

Yes david, I only used epoxy to attach gunwales. With epoxy the joint faillure will always be the wood never the epoxy. If it can hold the stem together I believe that it is fine for the gunnels. With the Freedom 17 the lines are fairly straight therefore I only had to use plastic spring clamps duri...

Fastening stem band

On my last canoe, I could not decide wether to glue the stem band or to screw it on. I understand that the regular approach is to use bedding compound under the band and to screw it on with countrsunck brass screw every 5 inches. Here is how I solved my dilemma. If you don't want screw heads to show...

Glen, The two tone yoke is made with ash and black walnut. I simply glued a piece of black walnut under some ash using thickened epoxy. Each piece was 3/4 inch. When I carved the center opening for the neck I eventually went thru the ash and the walnut started to show. Walnut is not as strong as ash...

I have a prospector and have the same problem, I outweigh my wife by about 50 pounds and could not place the seat forward enough to fully compensate. Then, when we go camping, trimming is done by positioning the gears forward to accomodate for the weight difference. However, for a day outting we don'...
