a reminder
not sure where else to put this. a canoe with 3 people fishing capsized in the past few days in this part of the world due to sudden gusts of wind. there was one fatality. the person in question wasn't wearing a pfd. i'm not sure what the laws in canada or america is, but here a type 3 or better ves...

Re: Where to splice strips and sheer clamp
because there was no strips over 3m available to me, almost every single strip on my build had to be scarfed. with the paulownia unless you look carefully the joints blend in. the western red cedar on the other hand is more obvious. i spread mine mostly 1 station apart, but when i got to the last fe...

Re: Strips are pulling away from the forms
Also, I am having trouble forming the inside stems with my spokeshave. It jumps as I pull it across the ash inner stem giving me a rough finish and the process shakes the whole boat. I have sharpened the blade, but to no avail. Any tips? myself as well as others on the forum have found using a saw ...

Re: splinters - the story thus far.....
That hardly looks like a canoe that almost became firewood ! yeh, compared to what it looked like at the beginning of january last year, i'm pretty pleased with how it's turned out. but none of that would have been possible without the generosity and support of people on this forum. if it wasn't fo...

Re: Varnishing ... to roll or not to roll
for uneven surfaces like the inside of the hull where the weave isn't completely filled i use automotive scuff pads. they are abrasive enough to give a good key for the varnish to bond and flexible enough to get into more of the weave pattern to provide good surface aria. i think steel wool would al...

Re: my first paddles
Looks great! Did you glass your shaft? thanx :dancing yeh, i glassed the shafts with 75mm glass tape and 2 coats of epoxy. if you look at the pic with the shaft and the blade core joined together you can see the weave. i know the construction method is supposed to be strong, but i just didn't feel ...

my first paddles
inspired by randy's birdsmouth paddles, i figured that since i needed paddles anyway, this would be a good way to get rid of some of the timber that would be left over once my canoe is done. aside from the link posted by randy, i also go a lot of help from a paddle making dvd by graham warren. the p...

Re: How to get rid of unfinished canoe.
kermit: he's already started stripping so i think he's referring to the rolling bevel on the inner stems. instead of a softwood like pine or cedar, mine are laminated tasmanian oak, which whilst not particularly hard, is a hardwood. i didn't think about the grain direction when i laminated either. t...

Re: splinters - the story thus far.....
Your storage system is exactly what I am planning on doing. I was thinking of black ports, but I like your idea of painting a white panel... may have to borrow that idea. :applause kermit, if you are going to paint the plastic, be sure you spray a couple of coats of plastic adhesion primer first so...

Re: Help! Strips Coming Away From The Molds
i'm also building a bobs special, and i used the stapeless method outlined in canoecraft.. more or less. i wanted the strips to be a bit more secure against the forms, so i also used flat stretchy straps as pictured in my thread: http://bearmountainboats.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4028 at th...

Re: bird's mouth seat frame
Making gunwales out of this approach sounds interesting but I wonder if it would really be that much lighter than a "uni-wale" (a single piece of wood with a channel cut in the bottom of it to straddle the sheer). erm.. actualy i never suggested using this to do the inwales. i think it wo...

Re: bird's mouth seat frame
oh yeh, forgot to mention... the ends of the frame where the mounting holes are have solid timber glued in to support the tube at those points, and there is a 0.5mm hole in the underside of the tubes to allow it to breath yet still stop water from getting in.

bird's mouth seat frame
when i was reading the "how light can it be?" thread, huffdaddy posted several things, amongst which was using a hollow tube like bamboo. a little light went off in my head and i thought "bird's mouth!" i'd made a couple of paddle shafts using this construction method with paulow...
