Here's what I'm building
Just off of the forms!
I copied parts from several different plans to produce a small fishing craft. ( I guess it's more boat than canoe)
it's 11'1" long, 37" wide and about 15" deep.
I designed it to be hauled top of an ATV to get to some remote trout lakes.
The goals were to make it short and light, but still to have decent capacity. It's going to be used with either an electric trolling motor or a small gas outboard. It's also going to get a centre seat and oarlocks for rowing.
Since it's wide and short, it wont be very fast, but thats ok. Our usual fishing technique for trout is to troll as slowly as possible.

It looks good! How much weight/ number of people do you need it to carry?

I'm planning on 2 people or around 400-500lbs maximum
Re: Here's what I'm building
It looks good! perfect for the trails.. Out of curiosity how thick is that transom? It looks like it's made from the same strips as the hull.
Re: Here's what I'm building
The transom is the same strips as the hull. I used two layers laminated together with a layer of 6oz glass between. It's getting a layer of glass on each side. I'm also adding a knee and quarter knees to brace everything to the gunnels and keel

Pretty cool boat! It's refreshing to see something different being built. I hope you post pictures when you're finished.
I also like your shop... If I didn't live so far away (Chicago area) I'd have to figure out a way to get myself invited over for a beer out of that fridge!
Have a good time with it - Her!

A few more pictures. I think I'm going to add some combing to the deck and a knee will go on next. I still need to flip it over and finish the epoxy because I only did the wet out coat before removing it from the forms to install the transom. Seats are under construction. I've got some time booked off work in three weeks to go fishing!

Hey Dsj, That looks sweet, Very nice job. Yeah I have to cane my seat frames too. They are made but I am waiting to get the boat further along. Again Nice Job. I hope mine looks as good as yours when I get the finish on the outside.

Hockey playoffs on TV are a good time to cane seats.
I can get one seat or back done during a game if it goes into overtime.

Re: Here's what I'm building
I have one question for you: will the stern seat allow proper control of an outboard motor?
Re: Here's what I'm building
THe seatbacks fold flat to either operate a motor in the stern, or to face foreward and paddle from the bow seat.Glen Smith wrote:I have one question for you: will the stern seat allow proper control of an outboard motor?
another option for slow trolling is to use an electric motor and tighten the steeering screw and use a paddle as a rudder. I tried this yesterday and it seems to work good.
I may modify my electric motor so that the speed control mounts on the battery box. Then all the controls will be infront of me.
