Alternative finishes?
Hey, I've always used Epifanes varnish for my cedar canoes. Like it. Just finishing up a kevlar/carbon/glass canoe... Looking for a more clear UV inhibiting finish.
Has anyone used this stuff?

I never knew it existed, but I viewed your link, it does look like it is a perfect match for your needs .... if you try it, I would be very interested in your impressions, I may have to look and see if i can buy it in Canada, just to give it a try.

I'll let you know what I think. I have a gallon in hand (it came from Ontario I think).
The price was definitely right.

Oh wait, I guess it came from Ontario California, Not Ontario CAN.
sorry

Re: Alternative finishes?
I'd be tempted to try on a test surface.
The price is very reasonable !
The water base would make it user friendly, and cheaper to ship.
I used a Water base Poly on a kitchen cabinet. It worked fine, but doesn't see any water.
If this works ? It could start revolution in boat finish !
Hope you can find someone who has experience with it !
Maybe and email to the manufacturer ??
Jim
PS . We all have to be Guinea pigs sooner or later

Re: Alternative finishes?
I put of a layer of this down on a scrap of epoxy coated plywood last night. It cured nicely over night. I'll dip it in water and see what delaminates first.

Re: Alternative finishes?
Here's a preliminary update on this stuff....
My test piece of plywood coated with well cured epoxy and just one coat of this finish left to cure for 24 hours and then soaked over night in water caused the finish to form tiny blisters and turn a bit whitish. So, extreme abuse doesn't work (it's suppose to cure in 4 days and I only gave it one).
So, I sanded the surface and put down 4 coats, let it cure a week and soaked it over night again. This time, it looked great. No blistering, no discoloring.
I put four coats on the boat over a 6 hour period, let it set for a week, sanded the hull (it was really hard to sand) and added two coats a couple hours apart. Here is he result:
It will need a season in the water/sun but so far, I'm happy with it.
I think this stuff would go on really well with a spray gun. You're suppose to be able to re-coat after 10 minutes....

Randy
You stated" It was really hard to sand" Did you mean it gummed up your paper, or was the surface hard ?
Also, did you use a foam brush ?
Thanks Randy for stepping away from the norm !
I'll have my fingers crossed !

Re: Alternative finishes?
The finish was hard to sand means I went through a ton of sanding disks to smooth it. It didn't gum. it was really hard.
Not sure where the double posts are coming from. We upgraded the system to address a problem where we were seeing up to 50 new account requests per day... It was really annoying. The new system stopped the bot requests for new accounts...
I'll notify that it's doing odd things.

Oh and I did use a foam brush. But I bet it would work really well with a sprayer....
