I am closing in on the final step- applying the final protective coat. I recall in the past reading in this forum of someone recommending automotive clear coat (urethane) instead of varnish. He stated that it sprays on 3 times thicker and has more UV inhibitors than varnish.
Has anyone other than the original poster tried this and can they share the results?
As always, thanks.

Re: varnish or clear coat
the finish is awesome. But "touch-ups" on the inevitable scratches are much harder to do.
Re: varnish or clear coat
As Randy stated, the finish is good, maintenance not so much.
I trip with mine and make a habit of touchup after the trip and there are usually lots of scratches. Having a finish you can maintain and "redo" every so often, is important.
I would find out how you can do "touchups" on whatever finish you are considering, then figure if you can live with that process .... there may be new products for clear coats that work for you ... or they may be all but unworkable after application.

Re: varnish or clear coat
A local builder friend put me on to this technic.
He would take Watco, and wipe over the white scratches in the varnish. They would disappear.
Allow some time for the Watco to cure.
It works.

All: Thanks for the replies. Jim: The Watco was used on varnish, not clearcoat, correct?

Yes, except I use the Teak in the Blue and white can.
Menards carries it.
